Why Smell Goes Straight to Emotion: The Neuroscience Behind Aromatherapy, Memory and Mood
Smell reaches the brain's emotion and memory networks without the thalamic relay every other sense uses. What that really means for aromatherapy.
You pass someone wearing a familiar perfume, or open a bottle of essential oil, and suddenly you are somewhere else entirely. A room, a person, a moment from years ago. Often the feeling arrives before you have even named the smell. Smell is the only sense that reaches the brain without first passing through the thalamus, the relay station every other sense goes through. That unusual wiring puts odors within close reach of the areas handling emotion and memory, which is why a scent can change how you feel before you have consciously worked out what it is.
It also explains a great deal about why aromatherapy feels immediate, and why the honest evidence for it is narrower than the marketing suggests.
How the other senses reach the brain
Sight, hearing, touch and taste all begin the same way. Specialised receptors convert light, sound waves, pressure or chemical molecules into electrical signals, which travel through the nervous system toward the brain.
Before reaching their primary processing areas in the cortex, those signals pass through the thalamus.
The thalamus is often described as the brain’s sensory relay station, though it is not a passive switchboard. It helps select, organise and regulate incoming information, influencing which signals get our attention and which reach conscious perception. Most of what you see, hear and touch is checked at a central desk before you become fully aware of it.
Smell takes a different opening route.
What makes the olfactory pathway unusual
When you breathe in, scent molecules land on a small patch of tissue high inside the nose. The nerve cells there pass the signal to the olfactory bulb, which sits just above the nasal cavity, behind the bridge of the nose.
From the bulb, the signal goes straight to the brain’s first smell-processing areas. No relay. And those areas include parts of the amygdala and the memory structures next to it, which is the detail that matters for everything that follows.
This is what people mean when they say smell bypasses the thalamus. But the popular version of that claim goes further than the science does, and the correction is worth knowing.
The thalamus does take part in smell. It just joins later. Emmanuelle Courtiol and Donald Wilson, reviewing the evidence, describe a part of it that sits between the first smell areas and the front of the brain, helping with recognising an odor and paying attention to it.¹ And in people with damage in that region, some aspects of smell survive while others are lost.²
There is a second difference, less often mentioned. The brain area that first receives smell is older and simpler in its structure than the areas that first receive sight, hearing and touch: three layers of cells instead of six. So smell is unusual twice over. It skips the relay, and it arrives somewhere structurally older.
Why smell, emotion and memory sit so close together
The brain has no single emotion center. Feeling and memory come out of several regions working together, and a few of them sit unusually close to the smell pathway.
- The amygdala works out how much something matters to you emotionally: comforting, rewarding, or worth being wary of. Brain imaging that traces the wiring between the olfactory bulb and individual parts of the amygdala shows just how direct that connection is.³
- The hippocampus, and the structures immediately around it, build and retrieve the memories that belong to your own life story rather than to general knowledge.
- The orbitofrontal cortex, behind the eyes, is where you consciously judge a smell: what it is, whether you like it, how it relates to taste. Most of what you experience as flavour is actually assembled here, out of smell and taste together.
This does not mean every scent sets off a wave of feeling. It means smells are unusually well placed to get tangled up with people, places and moments that mattered.
Why a scent can pull you into the past
Odor-evoked memory is sometimes called the Proust phenomenon, after Marcel Proust’s description of a madeleine dipped in tea reopening an entire childhood.
Rachel Herz and Jonathan Schooler tested this directly. They took three ordinary cues, a campfire, fresh-cut grass and popcorn, and presented each to participants as a smell, as a picture and as a sound, after the memory had first been called up by the cue’s name.⁴ Memories recalled alongside the odor were rated significantly more emotional than the same memories recalled with the image or the word.
But the same study found something that rarely gets quoted. Vividness and specificity did not differ by cue type at all. The smell made the memory feel more, not remember more.
A later review of the whole field is more cautious still.⁵ Some studies find that smells bring back memories from earlier in life. Others, using different methods, find no such thing. Emotion does seem to shape how we recognise and recall a smell,⁶ but this is not settled science.
So it would be too much to say that memories tied to smell are the most accurate or the longest lasting. Memory rebuilds itself each time we use it, and a vivid memory can still be wrong.
What holds up is the feel of it. Memories triggered by smell tend to arrive uninvited, with emotion attached, and with the body joining in. Sunscreen returns you to a childhood beach. One spice brings back a grandmother’s kitchen. The smell of a hospital corridor tightens something in your chest before you know why.
What this means for aromatherapy, honestly
Once the pathway is clear, aromatherapy stops looking mystical. But the pathway alone does not determine what a scent does to you. That depends on several interacting factors:
- The chemical properties and concentration of the odor
- Whether you personally find it pleasant
- Your previous experiences and learned associations
- Cultural and personal meaning
- The setting in which you encounter it
- What you expect it to do
Which is why the same essential oil can feel calming to one person and unpleasant to another. Scent is biological, and it is also deeply personal.
There is more evidence here than sceptics assume, and less than the marketing implies. Both things are true, and the useful question is what it actually supports.
Anxiety is where the evidence is strongest. A 2020 meta-analysis in the Journal of Affective Disorders pooled 32 randomised trials and found that both inhaled aromatherapy and aromatherapy massage lowered anxiety scores, by an average of just over five points on a standard state-anxiety scale.⁷ That is a real effect on people going through something stressful.
Sleep is close behind, and improving. Hu-Bo Chen and colleagues published the largest analysis to date in March 2025, pooling 27 trials and 2,072 patients.⁸ Inhaled aromatherapy improved insomnia symptoms, anxiety and depression, and on the standard sleep questionnaire it improved overall sleep quality, shortened the time people took to fall asleep, and improved sleep efficiency. An earlier analysis of 30 studies had already reported better subjective sleep quality in adults and older adults.⁹
Pain and nausea show smaller but consistent effects, particularly short-term: menstrual pain, post-surgical pain, postoperative nausea.
Now the limits, because they matter.
Almost every one of these trials has the same problem: you cannot blind someone to a smell. Participants know whether the room smells of lavender, and most outcomes are self-reported. That combination inflates results. The trials are also small, use different oils at different doses, and vary in quality.
The narrow claims fail accordingly. When Myung-Haeng Hur and colleagues looked specifically at whether aromatherapy moves cortisol, the stress hormone, in already-healthy adults, the pooled result was not significant.¹⁰ And America’s National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health still judges the research too limited to say whether aromatherapy treats clinical insomnia.¹¹
Put together, that is not a contradiction. It is a fairly precise picture. Aromatherapy helps people feel calmer and sleep better, especially when something is already wrong. It has not been shown to move stress hormones in well people, and it is not a treatment for a diagnosed condition.
Which leaves this, and it is worth having:
Aromatherapy is a genuine complementary comfort intervention. It can lower situational anxiety, help people sleep better, and take the edge off short-term pain and nausea. It does not replace medical treatment, and it does not need to. A supportive practice does not need to be a cure to be worth using.
Used that way, it belongs alongside the other things that help you return to calm rather than stay switched on, which is the real question in is stress bad for you.
Why is there so little large-scale research on aromatherapy?
One more thing belongs next to those null results, because it changes how you read them.
Good trials cost money, and someone has to want to pay for them. With a drug, the patent is the reason: a company that proves the drug works owns it afterwards. Nobody can own lavender. Elise Felicione, a clinical research scientist, wrote about this in STAT in February 2026 after trying to design a trial for a plant extract. Even a small randomised study costs more than $150,000. And if one brand spends $300,000 showing its extract helps people sleep, every other brand selling the same plant gets that result for free.¹² So the study usually does not get run.
The gap shows up in the numbers. Ludmir and colleagues, in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute in 2019, looked at 25 randomised trials of complementary medicine in cancer care alongside 739 conventional trials from the same period. Industry paid for 8.0 percent of the complementary trials and 76.5 percent of the conventional ones.¹³ Two things to keep in mind. This covers cancer research only, and 25 trials is a small base. The same paper also found the complementary trials were less likely to be built on earlier groundwork, which is about how they were designed and not only about who paid.
So this tells you why the evidence is thin. It does not tell you that aromatherapy works. A study that was never run is not a study that succeeded, and “nobody funded the research” is an easy thing to say when you have something to sell. The fair position stays simple: aromatherapy has been studied less than it deserves, for reasons that have nothing to do with whether it helps, and until better studies exist the ones we have are what we can honestly quote.
Why it feels so immediate
Part of it is simply that smelling something takes no skill. You are breathing anyway, and the brain starts working on the signal at once.
But there is a second reason, and it may matter more. A scent becomes a cue you have taught yourself. Use lavender every evening as you wind down, and your brain starts to link that smell with slower breathing and the end of the day. Use citrus while you work, and it comes to mean focus.
So several things are usually happening at once: the smell itself, what your brain does with it, the memories attached to it, what you expect it to do, and the habit you have built around it.
That is not a weakness in aromatherapy. It is a fuller account of how scent works on a person, and it points to something practical. Use a scent deliberately and repeatedly, and it will do more for you than any single bottle can on its own.
An old observation about smell
Long before anyone could trace a nerve, the tradition had already singled smell out as different. It is the same tradition that built an entire incense service around scent, which we look at in frankincense and myrrh. The Talmud asks which pleasure the soul enjoys while the body does not, and answers: fragrance.
אֵיזֶהוּ דָּבָר שֶׁהַנְּשָׁמָה נֶהֱנֵית מִמֶּנּוּ וְאֵין הַגּוּף נֶהֱנֶה מִמֶּנּוּ? הֱוֵי אוֹמֵר: זֶה הָרֵיחַ
“What is the thing from which the soul derives benefit and the body does not? Say: it is fragrance.” (Berakhot 43b)
The Rambam later turns this into practical law, devoting a chapter of the Mishneh Torah to the blessings recited over scent and distinguishing fragrance from trees, from herbs and from fruit (Hilchot Berachot 9).
I offer the parallel as my own reading rather than the text’s stated intent, since the reasoning there is theological rather than neurological. But the observation underneath it is oddly precise. Smell alone among the senses takes nothing into the body and builds nothing in it. It delivers, as the commentators put it, pleasure without consumption. Modern anatomy reached a related conclusion by an entirely different route: of all the senses, this is the one wired most directly to feeling.
From the nose to the heart
We say certain scents go straight to the heart. Anatomically they do not. But the metaphor catches something real: smell can reach emotionally relevant brain networks before we have fully identified or put words to what we are experiencing.
A fragrance can soften a room, signal safety, reopen a memory, or make us pause long enough to notice our own internal state.
The science of olfaction does not promise that every essential oil has a predictable therapeutic effect. It offers something more interesting. Smell sits at a genuinely distinctive meeting point of sensation, emotion, memory, learning and the body. That is what makes scent powerful, and why it deserves both curiosity and care.
Can a scent help you concentrate?
This one is worth a note of its own, because it is the question people ask most and the one with the least settled answer.
Mark Moss and Lorraine Oliver sat 20 healthy volunteers in a room scented with rosemary, for different lengths of time, then took blood samples. The more of a compound called 1,8-cineole a person had absorbed from the air, the faster and more accurately they worked through mental arithmetic tasks.¹⁴ That is a more interesting result than it sounds, because expectation should not follow a blood level. If believing in rosemary were the whole story, the people with more of it in their blood would not have done better.
The limits are real too. The effect only appeared on the harder task, alertness itself did not improve, and twenty people is a small study. A 2025 review by Ryusei Nishi and colleagues in Japan searched 115 studies on inhaled peppermint and thinking, found only eight solid enough to review, and said it is too early to conclude anything.¹⁵ And Sinead Howard and Brian Hughes found that what women were told to expect from lavender predicted their relaxation better than whether lavender was in the room at all.¹⁶
So this is a promising thread rather than a proven one. If a scent helps you settle into work, that is a real thing and worth keeping. It is just not yet something the research can promise you.

Does smell completely bypass the thalamus?
No, and the distinction matters. Smell reaches the brain's first smell-processing areas without going through the relay that sight, hearing and touch all pass through. But the thalamus is not absent from smell altogether. It joins later, helping with recognising an odor and paying attention to it. The accurate claim is that smell skips the first relay, not that the thalamus plays no part at all.
Is smell directly connected to the limbic system?
Some smell signals do reach regions involved in emotion and memory, including parts of the amygdala. The caveat is that the limbic system is not a single emotional center. It is a loose grouping of regions that work together, so describing it as one seat of emotion oversimplifies how the brain actually works.
Are memories triggered by smell more accurate than other memories?
Not necessarily, and the most-cited study on this makes the point well. Herz and Schooler found that memories recalled alongside an odor were rated significantly more emotional than the same memories cued by an image or a word, but they found no difference at all in vividness or specificity. The smell made the memory feel more, not remember more. Emotional intensity is not the same as factual accuracy, and memory is reconstructive, so a vivid memory can still be wrong.
Does aromatherapy actually work, or is it placebo?
For some things it works, and the evidence is reasonable. A 2020 meta-analysis of 32 randomised trials found that aromatherapy lowered anxiety scores by an average of just over five points on a standard scale. A 2025 analysis pooling 27 trials and 2,072 patients found improvements in insomnia, anxiety and depression, along with better sleep quality and faster sleep onset. The honest caveat is that you cannot blind someone to a smell, and most outcomes are self-reported, so some of the effect is likely expectation. That does not make it worthless. It makes it a comfort intervention with real effects on how people feel, rather than a treatment for disease.
Can aromatherapy balance hormones or lower cortisol?
The evidence does not support that claim. Hur and colleagues pooled five randomized trials of aromatherapy for stress in healthy adults, most of which they judged to be at high risk of bias. Inhaled aromatherapy showed a favourable effect on self-reported stress, but across the three trials that measured cortisol in saliva or blood, the pooled result did not reach statistical significance. The authors concluded the available trials were too few and too limited for firm conclusions. Aromatherapy should not be described as a hormonal regulator.
Can aromatherapy improve focus or concentration?
There is a real signal, and it is not yet strong enough to promise. Moss and Oliver exposed 20 healthy volunteers to rosemary aroma and measured 1,8-cineole in their blood: the more they had absorbed, the better they performed on tasks loading working memory and attentional control. A dose relationship is meaningful, because expectation should not track a blood level. But the effect appeared only on cognitively demanding tasks, alertness itself did not improve, and the sample was small. A 2025 scoping review of inhaled peppermint and cognition screened 115 studies, found eight worth reviewing, and called any firm conclusion premature. Treat focus as promising and unproven rather than established.
Why is there so little large-scale research on aromatherapy?
Largely because nobody has a commercial reason to fund it. Patent exclusivity is what justifies the cost of a pharmaceutical trial, and a plant cannot be patented, so a company that spends $300,000 proving an extract works hands the finding free to every competitor selling the same plant. The disparity is measurable: Ludmir and colleagues, in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute in 2019, found that industry funded 8.0 percent of complementary medicine trials in oncology against 76.5 percent of conventional ones, though that comparison covers cancer research only and rests on just 25 complementary trials. This explains why the evidence base is small. It is not itself evidence that aromatherapy works, and a trial nobody ran is not a trial that succeeded.
Can aromatherapy replace medical or psychological treatment?
No. It can be a genuinely useful supportive practice for shifting the sensory environment, encouraging relaxation and building rituals around rest or focus. It is not a treatment for medical or mental health conditions and should not replace professional assessment or evidence-based care.
